DOJ Rejects D.C. Council Request to Withdraw National Guard
Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald informed the D.C. Council that the city lacks the legal authority to request the withdrawal of National Guard troops. The Justice Department rejected the council's demands to remove members of the Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force. In a letter to the council, the DOJ characterized the request as "impotent theatrics" and "politically motivated." The D.C. Council sent letters to 10 governors asking them to recall their National Guard units from the district.
