How can we help?
Find answers about Govbase, subscriptions, and how it all works.
What is Govbase?
Govbase is a political news app that helps you understand what's happening in Congress, the White House, and more. We gather bills, executive orders, and regulations from official sources, then use AI to explain them in plain language and show you which ones matter to the topics and communities you care about.
How do I get started?
Start by creating an account to unlock personalization features. Then select groups, topics, interests, and states you care about. Browse the Feed to see bills, news, and social posts. Save important items to track them over time.
Is Govbase free to use?
Govbase offers both Free and Pro tiers. Free users can browse all feeds without limits and follow a small number of topics, tags, and states. Pro subscribers get unlimited following, unlimited saves, and access to features like news source and politician tracking. We never accept advertising to keep our analysis unbiased.
Why does Govbase charge for some features?
Two reasons: independence and sustainability.
Independence: Advertising-supported platforms serve their advertisers, not their users. When revenue comes from ads, there's pressure to drive engagement and clicks rather than provide accurate, unbiased information. We believe civic information is too important for that. By relying on subscriptions, we work only for you — our users — with no hidden agendas.
Sustainability: Running Govbase costs money. We pay for servers, news and social feed APIs, and AI analysis to process thousands of policies. These aren't free, and we don't take outside investment that could compromise our independence. Your subscription directly funds the infrastructure that makes Govbase possible.
The Free tier provides meaningful access to everyone, while Pro unlocks everything for those who can support our mission.
Who is Govbase PBC?
Govbase PBC is a public benefit corporation run by a small independent team passionate about making political news accessible. We're committed to making what's happening in government understandable to everyone, not maximizing profits. As a public benefit corporation, we're legally required to balance our mission of civic engagement with sustainable business practices.
Where does policy information come from?
All our policy information comes directly from official government sources including Congress.gov, the Federal Register, and the White House. We never change the facts — we just make them easier to understand with AI-powered breakdowns in plain language.
How do I save policies to read later?
Click the bookmark icon on any policy card to save it to your Watchlist. Your saved policies appear in the Watchlist where you can track their progress and updates.
What do the colored arrows mean on policy cards?
The arrows show how a policy might affect different groups:
• Green arrow up = Positive
• Red arrow down = Negative
• Orange swap icon = Mixed
• Gray icon = Neutral or no clear effect
These appear for groups, topics, interests, and states you're following.
How is the Feed organized?
The Feed has three sections:
• News: Political news articles from sources across the political spectrum
• Policy: Bills, executive orders, and regulations from Congress, agencies, and the White House
• Social: Posts from politicians on X, Bluesky, and Truth Social
Each section has its own filters to help you find what you're looking for.
How often is policy information updated?
We check for new items multiple times per day from all our government sources. When something changes status (like a bill passing the House), we update it within hours. You'll always see the most current information available.
Why do some policies have more detailed analysis than others?
We provide comprehensive breakdowns for bills that our AI identifies as having significant importance (score of 60 or higher). Smaller or more routine items get basic summaries. This helps you focus on what matters most while still having access to everything.
How do you keep AI analysis unbiased?
We understand that unbiased breakdowns are crucial for trust, and it's a concern we take seriously. We're consistently working to identify and address potential biases in our AI systems through rigorous testing and transparency measures. While no AI is perfect, we're committed to continuous improvement and being transparent about our methods. We never inject political opinions — we focus on the facts based on the official text itself.
What is the News section?
The News section shows political news articles from sources across the political spectrum. You can filter by source bias (left, center, right) to see different perspectives or focus on sources you trust. News helps you understand the broader context around policies and political events.
What is the Social section?
The Social section shows posts from politicians and government officials on platforms like X (Twitter), Bluesky, and Truth Social. You can filter by political party (Republican, Democrat, Independent) or by specific politicians. This helps you see what elected officials are saying directly, without media interpretation.
How do I search for specific policies?
Use the search bar at the top of the Policy feed to search by keyword, bill number, or topic. You can also use filters to narrow down by source (Congress, White House, Federal Register), status, topics, or the groups and interests they affect.
What can I follow in Govbase?
You can follow three types of things:
• Tags: People & programs like veterans, small business owners, students, Social Security, Medicare
• Topics: Policy areas like healthcare, education, environment, economy, and more
• States: Get updates on bills affecting specific states
Pro subscribers can also follow politicians and news sources. The platform highlights items that matter to what you're following.
How many things can I follow?
Limits depend on your subscription tier:
Free (Signed In):
• 3 tags (people & programs)
• 3 topics (policy areas)
• 1 state
Pro:
• Unlimited tags, topics, and states
• Follow politicians and news sources
Anonymous users (not signed in) cannot follow items.
How do I filter policies to find what I care about?
Use the filter options in the Policy feed to narrow down by sources (Congress, White House, Federal Register), topics, groups, interests, or states. You can combine multiple filters to see exactly what's relevant to you.
Why don't I see impacts for everything I'm following on every policy?
Not every bill affects every topic or group. We only show indicators when our AI finds a meaningful connection between a bill and what you're following. No indicator means minimal or no direct effect.
What's the difference between Free and Pro?
Anonymous (Not Signed In):
• Browse all feeds (bills, news, social posts)
• Cannot save or follow items
Free (Signed In):
• Unlimited feed browsing
• Save up to 10 items
• Follow 3 tags, 3 topics, 1 state
Pro ($4.99/month or $49.99/year):
• Unlimited saved items
• Unlimited following (tags, topics, states)
• Follow politicians and news sources
• Advanced personalization
• Support independent civic journalism
How do following limits work?
All users can browse feeds without limits — there are no scroll restrictions on bills, news, or social posts. Free users can follow a limited number of tags (3), topics (3), and states (1) to personalize their feed. Pro subscribers get unlimited following plus access to politician and news source tracking.
How do I upgrade to Pro?
You can upgrade from your Profile page or when you encounter an upgrade prompt while browsing. Choose from monthly ($4.99/mo) or annual ($49.99/yr) subscription options. On iOS, subscriptions are managed through the App Store. On Android, through Google Play. On the web, through your Account page where you can manage billing, change plans, and view invoices.
How do I manage my subscription if I signed up on iOS or Android?
If you subscribed through the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android), your subscription is managed through that platform:

What is the Govbase MCP server?
Govbase offers a free MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that gives AI agents read-only access to live U.S. policy data. It includes 11 tools for searching policies, stories, Congress members, and civic information. No authentication required, 100 requests per day.
How do I connect to the MCP server?
For Claude Code, run: claude mcp add --transport http govbase https://api.govbase.com/mcp
For Cursor or VS Code, add this to your MCP config:
{
"mcpServers": {
"govbase": {
"url": "https://api.govbase.com/mcp"
}
}
}
See govbase.com/mcp for full documentation.
Is there an API for Govbase?
We're exploring adding a public REST API, but the MCP server is currently the way to programmatically interact with Govbase. It provides 11 read-only tools covering policies, stories, Congress members, and civic data. Visit govbase.com/mcp for details.
