Investigation into Human Rights and U.S. Deportations to Ghana
A resolution requesting information on the Republic of Ghana's human rights practices pursuant to section 502B(c) of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961.
Sen. Kaine introduced a resolution asking the State Department for a report on how the government of Ghana treats people. The focus is on non-citizens who were sent to Ghana by the U.S. government during 2025 and 2026.
The resolution asks for evidence of serious human rights abuses, including illegal arrests, torture, and killings. It also wants to know if people sent there are being denied their legal rights or forced into slave labor.
Congress wants to know if U.S. tax dollars or security aid are being used to help Ghanaian officials mistreat these individuals. It also asks for details on any financial deals made between the U.S. and Ghana regarding these transfers.
If the resolution is approved, the State Department would have 30 days to give Congress a full report. This includes an assessment of whether the U.S. properly checked if these people would be safe before sending them to Ghana.
