Reintroduced from S. 4988 (118th), which died when its Congress ended.
This bill would award a Congressional Gold Medal to the men and women who fought in the Pacific during World War II and were taken as prisoners of war by Imperial Japan. It honors those who served in places like the Philippines, Guam, and Wake Island between 1941 and 1945.
The honor specifically recognizes the soldiers who survived the Bataan Death March and the siege of Corregidor. It also includes Filipino soldiers and civilians who fought alongside American troops, as well as the first group of American military women to be held as captives.
If passed, the gold medal would be displayed at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. The museum would also be encouraged to share the medal with other locations that have a connection to these historic battles and the veterans who fought in them.
The Treasury Department would be allowed to make and sell bronze copies of the medal to the public. The money from these sales would help cover the costs of making the medals so that the program pays for itself.
