Reintroduced
Reintroduced from S. 4452 (118th), which died when its Congress ended.
This bill encourages states to pass laws requiring ice cream trucks to have safety tools like the ones found on school buses. This includes flashing red lights and a stop sign that swings out from the side when the truck is parked to sell treats.
The plan also requires a special front mirror and a crossing arm to help the truck driver see children who might be walking right in front of the vehicle. These tools are meant to prevent accidents where drivers cannot see small children near the truck.
States that follow these rules would receive a portion of federal safety funds to help manage the new requirements. This money comes from a 1 percent slice of existing national safety program funds.
The government would also start a study to track how many children are injured near these trucks. This research will help officials find better ways to keep kids safe and decide if trucks should be banned from parking in certain dangerous spots.
