This bill is currently in the Senate Committee on Armed Services after being referred there on April 14, 2026. The committee must review the bill before it can move forward, but no further action has occurred since that date. Most bills do not receive a committee vote, so this proposal is not moving at this time.
While supporting the National Guard is usually popular, most bills introduced by a single senator without a large group of bipartisan cosponsors fail to make it out of committee.

Companion
Identical companion bill H.R. 8281 (119th) was introduced in the other chamber.
This bill would give National Guard members better benefits when they work full-time to help federal law enforcement. Currently, some of these missions do not count the same way as service during a national emergency, which can leave guardsmen with fewer rewards for their time.
Guard members would get credit toward early retirement and the Post-9/11 GI Bill for their time spent helping agencies like ICE, the DEA, and the ATF. This ensures they are rewarded fairly for dangerous work like fighting drug trafficking and organized crime.
The policy also provides access to the Transitional Assistance Management Program. This helps service members and their families keep their healthcare coverage for a short time after their active duty ends while they move back to civilian life.
To qualify for these benefits, the mission must be approved by the President or the Secretary of Defense. It must specifically focus on stopping major crimes, drug smuggling, or other big threats to public safety.
