The bill has bipartisan support from leaders on the relevant committee, but drone privacy and surveillance bills often face slow progress in Congress.
Key Points
This bill gives NASA the legal power to find and track drones that might be a danger to its facilities. Security teams would be allowed to monitor these drones and even intercept the signals used to fly them if they believe there is a real threat to a NASA center.
To protect privacy, NASA would have to follow the Constitution and delete any intercepted data within 180 days. They could only keep the information longer if it is needed for a police investigation or a court case.
NASA must work closely with the Federal Aviation Administration to make sure their drone tracking activities do not interfere with regular airplanes, airport safety, or the use of public airspace.
The agency would have to report to Congress every six months about how they are using this power. This includes reporting any times they accidentally damaged property or shared data with other agencies.
This new authority would not be permanent. It is set to end on September 30, 2031, unless Congress decides to extend it later.
