• This bill would require every person to provide official documents proving they are a U.S. citizen before they can register to vote in any federal election. • On Election Day, all voters would be required to show a physical photo ID that confirms their citizenship. Those who vote by mail would have to include a photocopy of their ID twice: once when they request an absentee ballot and again when they mail the completed ballot back.
• States would be required to set up programs to find and remove non-citizens from their voter lists. To help with this, federal agencies would be required to share citizenship data with state officials for free and within 24 hours of a request.
• The policy introduces criminal penalties for government employees who help non-citizens register to vote. It also allows private citizens to sue election officials if they believe the new registration rules are not being followed correctly.
