• This bill would require every person to provide official documents proving they are a U.S. citizen before they can register to vote in any federal election. • For people who register to vote by mail, the bill requires them to visit an election office in person to show their proof of citizenship. This must be done before the state's registration deadline or at a polling place if the state allows same-day registration.
• On Election Day, all voters would be required to show a physical photo ID that confirms their citizenship. Those who vote by mail would have to include a photocopy of their ID twice: once when they request an absentee ballot and again when they mail the completed ballot back.
• States would be required to set up programs to find and remove non-citizens from their voter lists. To help with this, federal agencies would be required to share citizenship data with state officials for free and within 24 hours of a request.
• The policy introduces criminal penalties for government employees who help non-citizens register to vote. It also allows private citizens to sue election officials if they believe the new registration rules are not being followed correctly.
