This bill would stop the Internal Revenue Service from hiring or keeping any employees who owe a large amount of back taxes. This rule applies to regular staff, high-level officers, and outside contractors working for the agency.
A person is considered to have a serious tax debt if the government has filed a public legal claim against their property to collect the money. However, people who are currently making on-time payments through an official plan or who are legally challenging their tax bill would still be allowed to work there.
