Sen. Wicker introduced a bill to give about 10 acres of federal land within the Vicksburg National Military Park to the State of Mississippi. The state would receive this land for free to help improve local tourism and visitor services.
The plan includes two specific plots of land. One area of about 3.6 acres is intended for a new welcome center, while another 6.5-acre area is designated for a museum or a center where visitors can learn about the history of the site.
If this bill passes, the National Park Service will officially change the park's boundaries to remove these sections. This allows the state government to take over the land and run the new facilities for the public.
