Reintroduced from S. 3617 (118th), which died when its Congress ended.
This bill helps the Cape Fox Village Corporation finish getting the land it was promised decades ago. It allows the group to skip taking 185 acres near the village of Saxman and instead receive 180 acres inside the Tongass National Forest.
The transfer involves two parts of the land. The Cape Fox corporation will own the surface of the land, while the Sealaska Corporation will own what is underneath the ground. This completes their legal land claims under a 1971 law.
The public will still be able to use the land for travel. The bill requires a public path to stay open so people can reach other parts of the National Forest from the water at George Inlet.
The Secretary of the Interior must finish the land transfer within 180 days after the corporation makes its final choice. This is meant to settle long-standing land ownership questions in the area.
