Sloan Canyon Conservation and Lateral Pipeline Act

Key Points

• This law expands the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area in Nevada by about 9,290 acres. This brings the total size of the protected land to 57,728 acres, ensuring more space is preserved for its natural and scenic value.
• The Southern Nevada Water Authority is granted a right-of-way to build the Horizon Lateral Pipeline. This project includes water pipes, power lines, and access roads needed to improve water delivery for people living in the region.
• The water authority is allowed to dig up and use or move rocks, sand, and gravel during the pipeline construction without paying the federal government for those materials. They will work with land managers to find appropriate places to put the extra dirt.
• To protect the environment, the law requires that the pipeline construction does not cause permanent damage to the surface of the conservation area. Additionally, no part of the pipeline can be built through or under any area officially designated as wilderness.
• The expansion of the conservation area will not interfere with existing power lines or utility corridors. Companies that already have equipment in the area can continue to operate, maintain, and repair their facilities as they did before.
