SAFE for Manatees Act

Key Points

• This bill requires the government to find new warm water homes for manatees in Florida. Many manatees currently stay warm during the winter by swimming near power plants and other industrial sites that release heat into the water.
• As these industrial sites close down, the water will get colder. This is a major problem because manatees cannot survive in cold water for long periods. The study will look for natural warm water spots or places where the government could build new heated areas for the animals.
• The Department of the Interior would have 180 days to finish the study and share the results with the public. They would work closely with Florida wildlife experts and the Army Corps of Engineers to come up with a plan to keep the manatee population safe as their current habitats change.
