• This bill asks the Department of Defense to look into what happened to service members who left the military because they did not want the COVID-19 vaccine. It focuses on people who were forced out or chose to leave between August 2021 and January 2023.
• A major part of the study looks at college benefits for families. Usually, a service member has to stay in the military for a certain number of years to give their GI Bill benefits to their spouse or children. This bill tracks how many families lost those benefits because the service member left early due to the vaccine rule.
• The report would also count how many people were denied religious exemptions and how many have since returned to the military. It asks for a cost estimate on letting these families use their education benefits anyway, even if the service member did not finish their full time in the military.
• The Department of Defense would have six months to finish the study and give it to Congress. Two months after that, the report must be posted online for the public to read. It will include details like which branch of the military the person served in and their rank.
