Key Points

• This bill would change how schools report student performance data. Currently, many states group all Asian American and Pacific Islander students into one or two big categories. This plan would require schools to break that data down into specific groups like Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Hmong, and Native Hawaiian.
• The goal is to show a clearer picture of how different groups of students are doing in school. For example, some groups might have high graduation rates while others struggle. By looking at specific groups instead of one large category, teachers and leaders can see who needs the most help and where to spend resources.
• The new rules would follow the same categories used by the U.S. Census. This includes at least 16 different Asian American groups and 6 Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander groups. It would also allow schools to add even more specific groups if they are able to do so to better represent their local communities.
• If this becomes law, states would have 18 months to update their reporting systems. This gives schools time to change how they collect information from families and how they publish their annual report cards to make sure they are following the new requirements.
