Pritzker Signs Law Requiring Independent Safety Audits for AI Developers
The new mandate requires major artificial intelligence developers to undergo independent audits of their safety plans. Illinois is the first state to require these third-party safety audits for large-scale AI systems. Pritzker stated that the law aims to embed safety and accountability at the frontier of technology development.
Pritzker framed the legislation as a necessary step because the federal government has been unwilling to act on AI regulation. Under Senate Bill 315, developers must also publish transparency frameworks detailing how their technology is applied. The governor claimed the law represents the strongest AI safety protections for citizens in the country.
