Trump reduces Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument by 90 percent
Trump issued a proclamation to reduce the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument by approximately 1.69 million acres. This action shrinks the protected area from 1.87 million acres to roughly 181,500 acres. The remaining land will be divided into the Canyons of the Escalante Unit and the Kaiparowits Horizon Unit. The administration intends to open the federal land for mining, oil, and gas development. This move follows a review of national monuments established under the Antiquities Act.
