A resolution condemning the Government of Iran's state-sponsored persecution of the Baha'i minority and its continued violation of the International Covenants on Human Rights.
Sen. Wyden and a bipartisan group of senators introduced a resolution to officially condemn the Iranian government for its long history of mistreating the Baha'i religious minority. The resolution highlights that since 1979, more than 200 Baha'i leaders have been killed and over 10,000 people have lost their jobs because of their faith.
The resolution points to a recent increase in the targeting of Baha'i women. In early 2024, more than 75% of Baha'is summoned to court or prison were women. It also notes that Baha'i students are often blocked from going to college and their businesses are frequently shut down or seized by the government.
The Senate is calling on Iran to immediately release all people imprisoned for their religious beliefs and to stop spreading hate speech against the Baha'i community. It also asks U.S. officials to use their power to put sanctions on Iranian government members who are responsible for these human rights abuses.
