This bill officially authorizes the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces, a group that has been working since 1982 to stop international drug gangs and money laundering.
The plan brings together over 500 federal prosecutors, 1,200 federal agents, and 5,000 local police officers to work as one team across 19 different strike forces around the country.
By working together, agencies like the DEA, Homeland Security, and the Postal Service can share intelligence and target the leaders of criminal organizations more effectively.
These task forces are designed to pay for themselves; in 2022 and 2023, they seized nearly $1 billion in cash and property from criminals, which helps cover the cost of the program.
The Attorney General would be required to release a public report within one year showing how successful these teams have been at reducing crime and stopping illegal drugs.
This law would stay in effect until January 20, 2029, at which point Congress would need to review the program's results and decide whether to keep it going.
