Sen. Blackburn introduced a bill that would give states $1 million each year to track and report crimes committed by people who are not U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents.
To receive the money, states must create a public website that lists how many migrants were charged with or convicted of crimes in every county and city across the state.
The bill defines a migrant as anyone who cannot show a U.S. birth certificate, a passport, a green card, or citizenship papers to law enforcement.
The goal of the policy is to collect more data on how people without legal status affect local crime rates and to make that information easy for the public to find.
If the bill passes, the grant program would start in 2027 and would be paid for using funds from a large spending law passed in 2025.
