This bill makes it a federal crime to rob, assault, or threaten anyone using or servicing an ATM. It covers all network-connected ATMs, whether they are inside a bank or at a convenience store, gas station, or mall.
It protects everyday people withdrawing cash, workers who refill the machines, and the businesses that own them. If someone steals more than $1,000 from a machine, they could face up to 10 years in federal prison.
Currently, federal law mostly focuses on crimes happening at actual bank buildings. This change ensures that criminals face the same tough federal penalties no matter where the ATM is located.
The penalties get much stricter if a weapon is used or if someone is hurt. Using a dangerous weapon during an ATM crime could lead to 25 years in prison, and if someone is killed, the offender could face life in prison.
