Congress would require Homeland Security to deliver a plan within 180 days to expand “Trade Transparency Units,” which share trade data to spot money laundering.
The plan would involve more information sharing between border officers, investigators, Commerce officials, and Treasury’s financial-crime office, plus partner customs agencies abroad.
The strategy must also improve how U.S. agencies share information with each other and with international partners, aiming to better track suspicious trade patterns.
The plan would be public (unclassified), but it could include a classified add-on. That means some details could stay secret for security reasons.
After the plan is submitted, the government’s watchdog would review it and report back to Congress within 180 days.
