Key Points

• This bill would let state governments hire private companies to help process applications for food assistance, also known as SNAP. Currently, only government employees are usually allowed to handle this paperwork and decide who qualifies for help.
• States could use these outside workers when they have too many applications to handle at once. This often happens during natural disasters, health emergencies, or when there are not enough regular staff members to keep up with the workload.

• The bill requires states to tell the federal government when they are hiring outside help. This information would be posted online so the public can see which states are using private companies to manage the program.
